Martin Slade was a renowned, aloof scientist who was a passenger on the ill-fated experimental shuttle flight to study the sun's radiant energy. The shielding on the shuttle which passed many simulation tests, failed. The flight computer detected the threat and immediately sent the shuttle back to earth - too little, too late. All on board were killed - except Martin. He awoke from his comatose state months later, his pupils bleached, his primary vision being infra red, and with an ability to focus and project beams of intense solar energy. He uses his powers for good where he can, all the while trying to understand them - understand exactly how much he has changed.
